Bonaventure Cemetery

The Bonaventure Cemetery is located in Savannah, Georgia.

It is a must to visit for the Spanish moss lover.
There are some stunning, unique headstones like this below with the oxidized copper kelp layered on top.
March is the best time for seeing a sea of azaleas in bloom here against the moss. Since we were here late in the season, only a few blooms were hanging on.

The most unique tribute I have ever seen in a cemetery is this of a runner. I imagine this is what she looked like! She makes you smile even though this is supposed to be a somber environment.

This cross lying down in the center is also an eye catcher.
If you have read the National Bestseller, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt, you may remember this iconic book cover.

The photo was taken at this cemetery. This statue no longer resides here but can be seen at Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah. She is Bird Girl sculpted by Sylvia Shaw Judson.

If you go, the cemetery is located at:

330 Bonaventure Rd
Savannah, GA 31404
Open daily from 8am - 5pm

Yard Update

Here is what is currently beautifying our yard.

This vivid orange flower is particularly exciting. Why?

It is pomegranate! Jim planted several seeds from a fruit we consumed a couple of years ago and this is the first year we are seeing flowers. The only one producing right now is still potted.

The ground pomegranate trees are doing fantastic, but no flowers yet.

This dogwood is special too. The tree was a dormant, sad looking one when purchased at a bargain. Now it is doing amazing! The bonus is this empress dogwood is an evergreen in our region.

The ornamental peach tree is producing! These are not quite edible but can be eaten. They just lack sweetness and juiciness.

The variegated Bengal Tiger Lily is unraveling its leaves. The flowers will be following.

Delicious treats for the butterflies are starting to flower.

The elephant ears are beginning to grow. These gain height fast and will be taller than me this summer!

We appreciate weeds here since they are great for the critters. Plus they are pretty in all phases!

The lemon bomb sedum has become extremely vibrant!

Wings of Greenville

Wings of the City is an exhibit of sculptures by Mexican artist Jorge Marin.

Perselidas Monumental
These are currently on display in Greenville, South Carolina.
Equilibrista 90

They demonstrate how beautiful the human form is.

Archivaldo Monumental

Abrazo Monumental

They also intrigue, leaving the viewer to wonder what the emotions are in each piece.

Split Monumental
A map is available for locating each piece.
Bernardo Oriental

If any of these look familiar, you may have come across them before since they have been traveling the globe since 2013. The Wings have been in places like Dubai, Singapore, Madrid and Berlin. It was exciting to see them 2 hours from home!

El Tiempo
Yes there is a selfie set of wings too so the visitor can experience a brief angelic moment in a peaceful setting.
Wings of Mexico
There is one more piece located inside the Peace Center, behind glass. Beautiful to see, but difficult to photograph since the theater was closed at the time.

These beauties are on display through October 2021. All are located in downtown Greenville, SC.

Meandering Columbia in South Carolina

The capital of South Carolina is a beautiful city.

Old homes are now commercial property.

Lovely porches are prevalent in these homes.

Of course gazing up is engaging. The rust works with the paint tone beautifully below!

Above may look familiar to some Americans as an old Greyhound bus station. This one was built between 1938-9. It is on the National Register of Historic Places so it shall remain!
A blue sky adds splendor to tall edifices.
Old fire houses make for unique business locations, this one being the Italian restaurant Villa Tronco.
A new mural popped up during the pandemic. It spans the length of a building. The 3 photos below show the left, middle then right section.

The artist is Ija Charles. What a talent this young woman is! The mural is based on Black Wall Street. The section of 1000 - 1100 Main Street in Columbia is historically known as an African American business district.

There is always some street art to inspire.

Bold, stunning columns command attention.

We usually find ourselves parking along the state house grounds which are so delightful to stroll. On an energetic day, it is fun to climb the many front steps to enjoy the view and the classical revival architecture above the entryway.

The flower arrangement behind me depicts a palmetto tree along with a crescent moon, the symbols on the state flag.
