Beaufort, South Carolina

Beaufort, South Carolina is a favorite getaway.

Being the second oldest city in SC, it sees plenty of tourists. Below is a tabby wall here which is concrete riddled with sea shells. This was common in Savannah and the Lowcountry of SC back in the day.

Beaufort is much quieter than the state's oldest city, Charleston making for a relaxing break.

There are charming walks leading to the riverfront.

There is a variety of eateries.

 Fun shops to peruse.

I love a shop that utilizes all its space!

Moving south we sort of traded bagels for biscuits (equal trade as far as deliciousness goes).  When going to a place like Beaufort that sees a lot of northerners, you can find NY style bagels. Rain n Bagels is the place for this!
As usual we do prefer to wander off the beaten path where you can enjoy things like massive, centuries old live oaks.

Horse drawn carriage rides are available so visitors can learn the local history of this city chartered in 1711.

Even busy intersections have charm with views of Antebellum homes.

I would think Beaufort is boring for children. However we did see quite a few little ones and there are plenty of candy and ice cream shops to keep them happy!

Besides tourist shops, there are eclectic shops.

Art galleries too.

There is even a tea shop.

This was our second visit.

I was pleased to see many of the establishments we visited the first time survived the pandemic.

This is a charming town to visit for a night conveniently located between Charleston and Savannah.

Something to ponder.
Have a marvelous day/evening (wherever you are on the clock)! ~Val

  2. It all looks very charming! I love browsing and shopping in cool little independent shops like those. My idea of a good time! Luckily, I usually don't feel the urge to buy a lot -- just looking is fun enough.

    1. We have a blast walking through the shops and chatting with the locals. Since we are not hoarders, we rarely buy anything too!

  3. I had a friend who lived there once and liked it but ended up moving before I could visit. What a shame -- it's really a beautiful place! I can see why it is a favorite getaway.

  4. It looks gorgeous with some really cute shops. Do you know why it is called a tabby wall?

    1. That is a good question with no clear answer. The closest origin to the word from what I read is the Arabic word "tabbi" which is a mixture of mortar and lime. It seems that this type of wall may have had Spanish origins in the area as it was referred to "tapia" in early references which translates as mud wall.

I would ride the carriage if I visit there. The candy shop is inviting :)
